After several weeks of remote learning I have noticed students are doing classwork in their living room on a couch, on the floor in their room or sitting up in their bed. I started asking my students if they had desks or wished they had them. The amount of students that needed desks shocked me. I then asked other teachers to ask their students similar questions and noticed that the numbers of desks needed kept growing.
I John Indlecoffer am a 5th year teacher at Waukegan Highschool. I teach Freshman Seminar (Basically a High School Success Class) and the sole purpose of our class is to help our students learn the tools to be successful individuals in highschool and in their lifetime. One way I want to help them be successful is providing them an opportunity Free of charge to get a handmade desk. I googled around and found a desk plan that only costs around $45 to complete. I built 1 desk to use as an image for this Gofundme.
I am willing to donate time and supplies to help get more desks built. We right now have an immediate need to build 50-400 new desks for children and we are asking for your support in helping to fund this effort. Each desk costs between $45 - 50 depending on materials and supplies. As a result, our goal is to raise between $2000 and $5000 dollars. The more we receive the more desks we can make. In other words, if you donate $50, you are buying one desk for a child who needs it. All desks will go to Students of Waukegan Public Schools Unit 60.
