I never thought I'd say that! But, it's happening... and it's going to be the experience of a lifetime.
The Otterbein University Senior Year Experience / Integrative Studies Africa course is a service-learning experience in which students of all majors have the opportunity to seek understanding of contemporary issues facing Africa. Some of these issues include education inequality and the lack of adequate educational resources.
The "Cardinal Classroom" is a two-classroom block in Nkhoma Village, a small community near Lilongwe, Malawi. Otterbein students fundraised and helped plan the construction of the building while participating in the travel course years ago.
This year, it's my turn! Our class, along with Otterbein professors Denise Shively and Glenna Jackson, will return to Malawi on April 30, 2018 to support our new project: Desks for Malawi Students.
Currently, Malawian students and teachers sit on the dirt floor of the "Cardinal Classroom" during lessons. There are no desks or benches.
Using our contacts in Lilongwe, we have located a contractor who is able to produce large, wooden desks and benches (able to seat two students) for only $40.00/each. This project will be completed by a local contractor, rather than being imported or purchased from a supplier.
Our class will meet this contractor and his family while visiting. We will also help build some of the desks and deliver them to the classroom. Better pack my tool belt!
1 Desk & Bench (seats two students) - $40.00
x 110 (capacity of the "Cardinal Classroom")
Total Cost - $4,400.00
I can't wait to share our African adventures with you! Please feel free to contact me at [email redacted] with any questions.
