Desiree is a 2016 graduate of Eastwood High School and is now attending medical school at The University of Akron. In high school she did outstanding academically and was an avid soccer player while also holding down two jobs.
While attending school full time, she also works as an STNA in Akron. She has learned to balance college classes, working 3rd shift, and living on her own in less then a year. As every 19 year old this time of year should be focusing on studying for exams and finishing up their first year of college away from home, some face other challanges. April 10th Desi went in to have a lump on her neck checked. They completed an ultrasound and the results were bad news. After finding a few lumps on her thyroid with dead cells in the center, she was told to prepare for the worst. Being a couple hours away from home, she was left with a few friends as her support and family by phone.

As a mother I would do anything for my children and this page is being set up to help alleviate some of her stress from the upcoming medical expenses and her time off of work for recovery. Please keep Desi in your thoughts and prayers and help support her in any way you can.

After a couple more appointments Desi found out she was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer that has spread to her Lymphnodes. She will have to undergo a thyroidectomy and a neck dissection to remove her thyroid and lymphs. She will then have to be given an injection of radioactive iodine to kill the rest of the cancer cells.
During this process she is remaining high spirited with the love and support around her. She remains focused and determined on finishing out this semester at Akron before she undergoes surgery.

I do have to say this girl is definately positive. Even after all the recent bad news all she could talk about was how cool it was to be able to see her "real" vocal cords. She even named her growth Thylanda and wants to request that they take a picture of it when it is removed because she really, really wants to see it. The medical field is definately her passion. Got to love this girl!!
Keep the positive vibes coming!!
