Desert Nomad is the culmination of my love for hats, the southwest iconography, and the dying trades of times gone- by. As a maker, I have been cultivating my craft and finding my voice as a female artisan. For the last year I have been apprenticing and learning from one of the greatest custom hat shops still operating in the United States. However, old businesses come with old guidelines, and I found myself fighting harder everyday to earn respect as I became the first female to ever work the bench in thirty years of operation. With each hat that I produced a new fire was lit to one day be my own operation. With Desert Nomad, I set out to make fashion accessories that serve a purpose and are built to last using methods that have been around for over a century. Fast fashion has has ruled the world for too long now and we have the ability to make things well and wear them longer. You'll be surprised how easy it is to say “Don’t touch my hat” when it's made just for you. Doing things differently while staying true to the origins of the craft is truly gratifying. Each hat will be handcrafted from start to finish by me and all materials sourced in the United States. From using the finest beaver and rabbit fur felts, the highest quality leather sweatbands, to utilizing hand-shaping techniques and hunting down original hatter’s equipment dating back to the late 1800s. My approach to hat making will both honor the history and traditions of the past while incorporating unique modern day flare into the designs and business. I am a nomad at heart, and my nomad soul surely holds its special place in the desert. So, here I am. Combining the two things I love most: the desert, the open road and creating. I want Desert Nomad to supply a community made up of adventure seekers, conscious shoppers and the wanderers. I will offer ready-to-wear hats, accessories and apparel from the Desert Nomad line for sale. Customers are also welcome to schedule a custom appointment to create their own unique Desert Nomad hat.

What will these donations be going towards, you ask? Donations will help with purchasing additional tools to build inventory and a mobile hat shop. Alongside that, it is my goal to have a brick and mortar hat shop that serves as a community gathering space, workshop and storefront, and a learning space in the heart of Downtown Las Vegas at Ferguson's (https://fergusonsdowntown.com/). Being a wayward soul and devotee to the open road, the trailer would enable me to travel across the United States and offer pop-up workshops for hat-making classes; this will allow me to keep the nomad spirit alive by doing so. I have apprenticed for a year to learn the trade, completed a business plan, purchased a large portion of equipment on my own, acquired a business license, have begun marketing & building a social media platform (@desertnomadhatco), and I absolutely have the skillset and passion. Now I just need a little help from the people that believe in me most to get this thing fully operational.
