Low vision changes everything—how someone reads, works, drives, cooks, and moves through the world. Yet in New Mexico, outside of the VA system, there are currently no practicing low-vision specialists available to the general public. That means many people are left without guidance, tools, or support to use the vision they still have. I’m working to change that through my business, Desert Light Low Vision Consulting. This project is about bringing practical low-vision support to people who have been underserved for far too long—especially in rural, Native and low-income communities.
Low vision care isn’t just about glasses or exams; it’s about teaching people how to adapt their environments, access assistive technology, and regain independence in their daily lives. For many individuals, vision loss doesn’t qualify as “blindness,” yet it still takes away the ability to work, read medication labels, recognize faces, or safely navigate their surroundings. Without specialized services nearby, people are often told to “just live with it.” That gap in care is what this effort exists to address.
By supporting this campaign, you’re helping build access to education, resources, and advocacy for people with low vision—so they don’t have to travel out of state, or go without support altogether. This is about visibility, dignity, and making sure no one is left behind simply because of where they live. Thank you for being part of something that puts access and community first. Your support will help Desert Light Low Vision Consulting bring hope and independence to those who need it most.
