Like every family, you do the best you can. Ours worked hard over 2018 to build up a healthy savings account. Two working adults housing and raising two boys can do a lot even with a little. We took pride in the home we owned, the savings account we had worked hard to fill, and the careers we had that provided for our family.
In March this year however, Thomas lost his job due to corporate reorganization. He received a small severance (which pushed out when he could apply for unemployment by several months) and immediately began looking for work. Unfortunately just before his last day, our washer and dryer gave out. They had been limping along for several years and Thomas's years as a Maytag man helped but we had to buy new ones. It hit our savings a little, but we were still optimistic.
Then a week after Thomas lost his job, we had a tree threaten the power lines to our home and the rest of the neighborhood. Due to its position and proximity to the powerlines, it was an expensive expenditure that we could not avoid. Thus our diligent savings was drained.
We have been very careful in the 7 months since he became unemployed, to budget and work for extra cash whenever the opportunity arose. And even though the oldest child has moved out on his own, we have added to our family with a new little girl. We also took in our umemployed friend and our godchild for several months, supporting them. It was a drain on our limited resources (auto insurance, food, monthly expenses raised), but they had nowhere else to go and we have always been those kind of people.
Unfortunately, we have come to a point where we just desperately need help from others. Life living paycheck to paycheck is a story many people know well and we thought we had done well enough in saving for such emergencies, but no one could have foreseen getting hit so hard.
Thomas has been diligent in searching for jobs, but has not yet found one and we are asking for help to get through at least one more month of bills. We have stretched as far as we can stretch. The money raised here will go directly to paying our mortgage, monthly bills, and food for our family.
