Derrek Romer's Funeral

Derrek Garth Romer went to be with the Lord unexpectedly Dec. 27, 2016 at Good Sam Hospital in Downers Grove Illinois. He was born Feb. 10, 1989 in Jacksonville Florida to Russell and Kelly(Spencley)Romer.

The family moved to northern Michigan in 1995, where he attended Pellston School then Harbor Springs High School where he graduated in  2007. He graduated from UTI the Toyota program in Chicago in  2009. While in Chicago, he met the love of his life Elizabeth Lynn Contri. They were married in a fabulous week end wedding celebration on August 8, 2015 at Kuipers Family Farm in Maple Park Illinois, officiated by his maternal grandfather Garth Spencley. It was a weekend we will all remember. They were the perfect hosts all weekend. They settled in their new home in Villa Park, Illinois. He was busy with his own business “Romer Remodeling and Repair” and did many projects with his father in law John Contri.

Derrek and Elizabeth loved to entertain and spent a lot of time with family and friends (he always presiding over the grill and smoker),enjoyed mechanical work(always had a vehicle to work on),  mud bogging, snowmobiling(anything in the snow!), deer hunting with the guys at Grandpa Spencley’s deer camp, NASCAR, Notre Dame, country music (especially Garth Brooks), and playing with their dogs Roxi and Hemi. He was always available to help someone. He had a heart of gold.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents George Sr. and Audrey Romer and uncles David Spencley, Doug, Allen, and George Jr. Romer and aunts Hilda (Romer)McGraw and Irene (Romer) Stevens.   

He is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth, parents Russell and Kelly Romer, sister Lavina Romer, maternal grandparents Garth and Mabel Spencley, aunts Betsy(Kerry) VanOrman, Kathy Dillon, Gertrude (Milford) Beaz, Shirley, Katurah, and Pat Romer, and uncles Charlie (Christine), Donald(Laurie), and Jesse Romer, Godmother Caryn Herzberg, father and mother in-law John and Lynn Contri, and grandparents-in-law Dan and Marcy Siels, many dear cousins and dear friends. We will all miss him so!

Derrek’s life will be remembered and celebrated at a Visitation at Steuerle Funeral Home 350 S. Ardmore Ave Villa Park,IL   Saturday Dec. 31, 2016 from 12 noon to 4:00p.m.

Another celebration of his life will be a memorial service to be held at New Hope United Methodist Church in Levering Michigan on Mon. Jan 2 . Visitation at 5:00 with service at 6:00.

Burial will be in the Maple River Township cemetery in Brutus in the spring.
