Friends, family, co-workers, and fellow adventure seekers-

“The Dude” could use our help. If you know Derek Mortensen, then you probably understand the reference to the Big Lewbowski. To be clear, Derek is funnier, better looking (this is questionable actually), and more put together than The Dude.

Two weeks ago, Derek was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma and Lymphoma. This type of brain tumor is aggressive and, unfortunately, spreads quickly. Upon hearing this life-altering news, in true Derek fashion, he alleviated the tension in the room by cracking multiple jokes with the doctors. While this type of cancer is no joke, we know that Derek is equipped with a strong body and mental fortitude to withstand the treatments coming his way.

Derek will undergo both chemotherapy and radiation in the next few weeks. As you know, this treatment is intense, unpredictable, and very expensive. Besides the cost of treatment, there will be many other potential expenses. Derek will most likely not be able to work during this time, which means that his family could also use your support. Truly ANYTHING will help. Please consider donating whatever you can afford. Derek and his family would be forever grateful!

As I write this, with my trembling hands and quivering lip, I can't help but think of all the times that Dee showed up for me in my life (usually annoyingly early with a clever text to subtly remind me to hurry up), and I have only had the privilege to know him for a few years. I cannot imagine all the times he has shown up for those that have known him for his whole life.

If you have ever flown in Derek’s hot air balloon, jumped out of it, flown gliders, speed wings, parachutes, been up in an airplane, hiked all over the state and country with him just to keep the wilderness safe and fire-free, thrown out a sleeping bag in the heat of summer surrounded by smoke and flames, been on his truck, crewed on the balloon, helped clean up the balloon when he's landed in your neighborhood, seen him at volleyball games, or any of the other crazy activities he does; then you understand that Derek truly loves life, loves making those around him laugh, and smile, and he loves to always be there for his people.

Derek embodies the best of what we all want to be. He has always been loyal to the people he loves. We now have the opportunity to make Derek’s life a bit easier by showing him our love and loyalty. Just like his balloon, it’s our turn to “lift” him up right now. CANCER SUCKS. There is no rhyme or reason as to who it can affect nor when it will strike. Let’s show Derek and his family our utmost support so that they can focus on treatment and recovery at this difficult time.
