It Came, He Fought, He Won

Two months after the happy birth of their second child, Derek went to the doctor for a lump in his neck and found out that it was potentially cancerous. In April of 2015, Derek had a neck dysection that confirmed it was Thyroid Cancer.  He then had his thyroid removed as well.  The surgery resulted in 29 total lymphnodes being removed, 9 were cancerous and 4 cancerous nodules were found on the thyroid.

The surgery  left him out of work for several weeks for recovery.  After recovering enough from his surgery, the course of treatment was radioactive iodine. This required a special diet and isolation from his family for a week in June. His follow up scan showed small spots on the other side of his neck that should be successfully treated from the radioactive iodine.
