Derek needs a new heart. We are Wanda and Derek Liggins. On August 23, Derek went to the ER for shortness of breath and very low blood pressure. Turns out it was more - much, much more. Derek was in A-Fib and heart failure, and we were told he needs a heart and kidney transplant.
Derek and I have been married for 10 years. We met in 2009, online, and knew we were meant for each other right away. We met in March and married six months later in October. Today, we're 10 years strong.
Our story is one of love, redemption, strength, perseverance, and second chances.
Before Derek and I met, I was a single mother raising 3 children alone and working as a Chef for Whole Foods. Derek was released from prison after doing 8 years. Those 8 years gave Derek time to think, and he made a conscious effort to put his life on track for the way he wanted to live.
He took HVAC classes while in prison to give him a skill upon release. Derek got involved with the Center for Urban Families that offers a workforce development training called STRIVE. After completing STRIVE, Derek was immediately hired by Mechanical Engineering and Construction Company, a company that believes in giving second chances. Derek began as an apprentice in 2008, and is now a foreman celebrating 11 years with the company.
After being on the receiving end of a second chance, Derek works on behalf of others, acting as a mentor and example for others coming home from incarceration.
Derek and I have worked very hard to accomplish many goals. Derek purchased a new car. He returned to college to study project management. We purchased our home in 2014.
We love each other and our family. And we still have a lot to do together and for others.
Derek and I have always made sure that our family is provided for, but we have never faced a situation like this. Our GoFundMe funds will go to maintaining our household bills and cover the out-of-pocekt medical expenses that won't be covered by insurance. When Derek gets his new heart and kidney, I will be taking a non-paid leave of absence from work to care for him after surgery.
We don't want all that we have accomplished to be put in jeopardy because of this transplant. These funds will give us the peace of mind needed for Derek’s rest and healing.
Derek and I appreciate any help provided.
Peace and Blessings
Wanda and Derek Liggins
