Derek Molinski

Hi, my name is Jody Wachniak and one of my best friends Derek Molinski had a really bad snowboard accident up at Mt. Seymour on December 5th while riding the park. I’m trying to raise Derek some funds to help out with his lose of wages and rehab costs.

In brief; Derek slammed his chest on a mental rail in the snowboard park up at Mt. Seymour. He was immediately rushed to the hospital. At first the doctors didn’t see any serious issues but after a scan to the chest they saw leaking in his stomach. Derek was rushed to get surgery on his small intestine. They removed the damaged section of small intestine and had a second surgery to reattach the small intestine. Leaving him with 34 staples across the chest/ stomach area. Derek remained in the ICU as his white blood cell count kept rising after the surgery’s. The doctors soon found an infection and after a few more scans they found liquid building up in his lungs. They proceeded to removed over a litre of liquid from his lungs. As of today they did another scan finding liquid on the outside of his stomach that shouldn’t be there and now he is waiting for the next step(s). We are praying that all major issues are over and done with so he can return home as he’s been in the hospital for over 14 days.

Derek is an integral part of the Canadian snowboard scene. Whether it’s coaching kids, filming video parts or just lapping the park; Derek’s positive energy is something snowboarding needs and loves. As of right now we don’t know the full extent of the recovery process but I want him to know the community is here to support him through this difficult time. He’s lost a lot of weight and muscle-mass and will need a lot of physiotherapy and months off both working and snowboarding. Yesterday I got the oh k to finally visit him at the hospital and as tough as this kid is, without a doubt this has been the hardest time in his life. He positive and excited to go home.
