Derrick Cunningham from Rathangan, Co Kildare is a hardworking family man with an infectious sense of humour and always willing to lend a hand when someone is in need.
In late December 2025, what seemed like a simple fall, resulted in a catastrophic spinal cord injury, leaving Derrick paralysed from the neck down.
After having surgery, Derrick spent several weeks in the Mater hospital and Tullamore hospital, Derrick is currently undergoing intensive rehabilitation and making encouraging progress in the National Rehabilitation Hospital.
With hard work, strength and courage Derrick is determined to continue this progress when he returns home and regain as much function and independence as possible.
To help Derrick on his journey, his friends in Kildare Cycling Club are taking on an incredible challenge, cycling from Mizen to Malin. Every kilometre cycled is a show of support and belief in Derrick’s determination. All funds raised will go directly towards Derrick’s ongoing rehabilitation, specialist equipment, an accessible vehicle and the care and support he will need in months and years ahead.
Thank you for joining us on Derrick’s Road to Recovery
