Hi I'm Sean, Derek and Martina are some of my best friends, and some of the most wonderful couple of people I've ever met. They recently married last year in September, the photo is of their wedding day in the forest. They've lost all of their possessions in the recent wildfire that overtook Jasper, Alberta, and they only have a bag of clothes and a camper van left.
This money will be to help keep them on their feet for the time being, since their workplace (both employed at the same location) was also destroyed by the fire, Marmot Basin Ski Resort. **EDIT JULY 29: UPDATE: THE RESORT IS OKAY, THEY WILL HAVE A PLACE TO WORK AGAIN EVENTUALLY ONCE OPERATIONAL** This at least gives them money to get some clothes from second hand stores and food for their mini fridge over the next couple weeks, and to cover their remaining bills/fuel/cell phones so they can maintain communication. They have a cat that also needs some care, Fang, she does love an outdoor adventure but this is unfortunately maybe more than that.
Martina was planning to move out and go to school in a month, I don't know if she still will, and Derek was going to finish his snowboard training school until January before moving out to be with her again. They might still be able to do these things but I worry they'll have a really hard time, or just give up because of this devastating blow. This money would likely also encourage them to follow through with their education and training, so they're not out of pocket as much if they do. They're often very positive people so I think they would try to continue.
Anything you can provide to support them would mean the world to both of them, they're in a really tough spot and this wildfire took everything away in just 24 hours. $2500 for a goal seems small when some things need to be purchased immediately or replaced soon, but it's a start. Thank you.
