Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Fund
Donation protected
It was Friday afternoon (9/27/2019), when Harwinder Dhaliwal (MDS Coordinator) called me stating she has to go home for a family emergency. In response I asked if everything was ok? Harwinder responded "My father-in-law called me and said something happened to my Husband (Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal) and I am going to see him. Harwinder sounded panicked and nervous. I immediately told her to please go ahead and take care of her family first.
As I was getting back to the facility, I passed through the local grocery store and saw large amount of Police cars. Harwinder's call clicked in my mind and I googled to see what happened in the area. As soon as I read the headline stating "Deputy Shot in Harris County", it gave me goose bumps. I searched further and found out Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal (Harwinder Dhaliwal's Husband) was fatally shot in the head from behind while making a traffic stop. He died after being airlifted to the hospital.
Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal was first Sikh Deputy when he joined the county force 10 years ago. After his hiring, the Sheriff's office added to its regulations to allow him to wear a beard and turban as an observant Sikh. He began his career in law enforcement to strengthen the department's relationship with Sikh community. During Hurricane Harvey, Dhaliwal worked with a national Sikh group to deliver truckloads of donated good to first responders, and also traveled to Puerto Rico to assist the family of a Sheriff's office colleague after a hurricane.
He was a hero, and a respected member of the local community. In light of the tragedy, we encourage everyone to lift up prayers for Harwinder and her family. We established a fund via gofundme.com to support Harwinder Dhaliwal and her 3 young children. All raised funds will directly go to Dhaliwal family.
