Mabel’s Recovery

Hi, my name is Holly.. I’ve been encouraged multiple times from those of you invested in Mabel’s story to put one of these together so here we are. We don’t typically ask for help and have the mentality of, “We’ll figure it out”, more often than not, but right now we just might need to accept the help that’s being offered so generously.

We are parents to 6 kids, 13 dogs & 1 cat currently. Our dogs aren’t just animals- everyone of them are kept up with, properly vetted, and loved beyond measure.

On December 6th, in the midst of pouring rain I went to put Mabel up from being let out to use the bathroom and stretch. Being the hound she is, I should’ve expected no less, but Mabel decided to jerk away and take off following her nose. I instantly got in my car to look for her but had no luck. My only choice was to return home and wait on her- minutes turned to hours, then days. I felt like we lost a massive piece of our family and just knew she wasn’t returning.

Wednesday December 14th, 8 days later, 1 minute prior to pulling into our driveway from

church, Mabel set our front camera off and made her way home. To god be the glory! Upon initial inspection, she just seemed to be weak, tired and hungry. No visible injuries, we thought our girl just needed some good rest and a full belly.

The following morning (Thursday) we noticed Mabel was struggling to do anything essentially.. she couldn’t get up, hardly walk and when she did we knew something wasn’t right. She would yelp out as if she was in massive pain, was dragging her back end and crawling essentially Vs walking.. so we made a vet appt for Friday.

Friday 12/16/22, I felt the worst I’ve felt in a long time.. where I was suppose to keep her safe, I failed her… it appears Mabel was hit by a car & left for dead. This girl likely laid for days in the woods somewhere in too much pain to get up and walk or make it home. God gave her the will to get up and come home and now we will make a way for her. Anyone who knows her knows she knows her way back home, so 8 days being gone never sat right with us to begin with. Mabel has multiple broken bones along her back and pelvic. She will never be able to have puppies now.. and may need surgery on her back & pelvic area going forward. Surgery isn’t something we could afford even if it was something needing to be done yesterday, so the care plan at this moment is pain management which the vet said could be something she will need long term- it’s one of those wait and see things. The goal for the next few weeks is tons of rest and limited movement.. hope like hell her bones form back together somewhat on their own and re-evaluate in a few weeks. We will know then how essential surgery will be for her, and adjust the goal if we need too at the time.

Yesterday’s bill with bare minimum evaluations was $321, we’ll be repeating everything all back over in a few weeks so that’ll be another $321+, on top pain meds we need to buy to keep her comfortable regularly.. She’s currently sleeping on a thick/firm toddler bed mattress, but I would love nothing more than to buy her a bed she would likely enjoy more and is far

more comfortable, however funds funds and more funds.

We are parents to 6 kids again, Christmas, bills, life.. we could’ve afforded for this to happen anytime but now. Any help you can give we will take, and whatever is left over I aim to put towards another pets bill in need of help somewhere In the community or donate to a shelter for other pets in need.
