This GoFundMe request is for my Aunt Nancy (Epping) Southwood.

Nancy Southwood is 68 years old. She is disabled/retired. She is not able to work at this time in her life. Nancy is a good, caring, and strong person who would do anything to help others in need if she is able.

Nancy suffers from an autoimmune disorder called Sjogren’s syndrome (disease). She has had this disorder for many years now. Sjogren’s syndrome is an immune system illness that causes dry eyes and dry mouth. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks its own healthy cells. Sjogren’s often occurs with other immune ailments such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The most common complications are mouth lesions, tooth loss, gingivitis, gum disease, and dental cavities. Saliva helps protect against the bacteria that cause cavities. You are more prone to developing cavities and mouth lesions if your mouth is dry.

Nancy’s gums, mouth, and teeth are causing her a lot of discomfort, pain, and medical issues. She is losing most of her teeth, and eventually, she will lose all her teeth.

Unfortunately, the USA medical/dental system is inadequate. Nancy does have dental insurance that she pays for. It is a supplemental insurance offered by United Health Care (what a surprise). It only pays for x-rays and exams. Anything else, like fillings, teeth extractions, etc., the insurance does not pay for. Nancy’s only income is social security. The average cost to have her teeth removed, the broken teeth and the teeth removed, and dentures is around $10,000. The least expensive place to have this done is the dental school at OHSU, and her cost would be around $4,000. Nancy has called every agency and dental office and United Health Care to try to find any grants or assistance, and there isn’t any. It is very sad for low-income seniors in this country. It is important for people to have teeth to function with.
