Dennis's Journey: Cancer and Canine Loss
Donation protected
I was born in 1962 in Lancaster, SC, to a young mother, and was adopted by my grandparents. I was raised as the youngest of eight kids. As soon as I was old enough to take care of myself, I moved to Charlotte, NC, where I spent many years. I stayed in touch with some of my family, but only close with a few members. I’ve lived independently my entire adult life, never married, and have no kids; however, I have mostly always had a canine companion.
I moved back to Lancaster in 2002 to be close to my nieces. Along with my dogs, they help me cope with the trials and tribulations of my life. I’ve dealt with sickness and medication for many years, but this last fight with cancer has been a setback like no other. Before November 14th, 2022, my life included weekend trips, day trips to the mall, shopping and eating, parties, and celebrations. Unfortunately, all of that changed after my first surgery to remove the cancer from my jaw. I didn’t realize until later that I would never live a normal life again.
I am now 100% tube-fed and physically disfigured. After 14 surgeries, I still have thyroid cancer, which has been deemed non-life-threatening and unnecessary to treat because I can’t physically, mentally, or emotionally undergo more cancer treatments or removal. According to my surgeons, it’s the least of my concerns.
I’ve been trying to get out more as time goes on, and as I’ve come to accept that this is my life. April 26, 2025, I lost my four-legged partner to cancer; I had her for 10 years. She was a sweet, lovable dog. I am looking for another dog, and I had forgotten how much it costs to train a dog to be a service dog. I’ve checked with several trainers, and they all charge between $20K to $30K. HOW unreal, for someone in my shoes who already has doctor and hospital bills.
Your support will help train a dog as a service dog.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks, Dennis
