Allah'u'abha and hello, dear friends! My name is Denise Gilbert and I'm a Baha'i from Standing Rock; South Dakota side of the reservation; and of Lakota origin. My current family consists of two nieces, ages 14 and 15, and two granddaughters, ages 6 and 7, with various nieces and grandbabies dropping in for tlc and assistance as needed. My sweet girls and I have been homeless for 18+ months, living with family who struggle with alcoholism. This has been a challenging situation as we search for an affordable home to call our own. Housing has been impossible to find. Our options to move out of the area are greatly limited due to the high costs of living elsewhere, and my current financial situation. I've become somewhat alarmed because my children are starting to display symptoms of traumatic stress overload as circumstances continue to deteriorate here. I'm VERY concerned for their well-being.
My reason for bringing this to you is to ask for your assistance.
Through a very assertive effort, and a happenstance visit with a friend while my 14 yr. old and I were stranded on the road with a blown-out tire, an opportunity presented itself in which I found out about a trailer being sold. Initially, it was being sold at a higher price but through the connection and influence of my friend, we were able to keep the price low and the owners were agreeable with helping my girls and I. I’m not a very outgoing person, nor a very outspoken one; I tend to be rather shy, but my wonderfully adept friend stayed with me, helping me navigate a negotiation that even I am surprised by. But it was an opportunity to get us into a safe haven, and it was worth every bit of fear of rejection that I talked my way through. Domestic abuse is no trivial matter. I have that much more insight into the dark tunnel that it is. My sweet girls have been brave companions in this experience, but it’s time for us to seek some peace. We’ll all leave with grateful appreciation for the blessings and mercies shared with us, that’s for sure.
This ridiculously far-fetched thing has accomplished magnificent goals in the past week.
Every morning and night my sweet girls want to know if today we’re moving. They are in such need of a place to set themselves down in. They want to relax and not be bullied, made to feel unwanted, and spoken to in terrible ways that rob them of their innocence, and beauty. We’d love a good night's sleep, food in the pantry and fridge, a clean living space to relax and study.. Safety. Basic needs that we're starved for.
We’ve prayed, lit sage, given thanks for what we have and ask for guidance on how to move forward. It isn’t as easy as it seems but if the resources are there and the haven has presented itself, then we’ll gladly take the opportunity to do so!
I hope we can arrange to have the trailer paid in full and moved within the next week. The next steps can be accomplished after that.
Your assistance will be So Greatly Appreciated!
Believe me when I say that my darling girls, who are each so compassionate, tenderhearted, hopeful, and spiritually-directed sacred beings, need the respite. We thank you from our hearts to yours.
