As many of you know cancer sucks and sadly - it seems like it is becoming an all too common occurrence these days. Our family has not been immune
to this . My sister Denise, specifically has seen firsthand what it is like to become cancer’s adversary, not once but twice .
Our family has been through a lot in the past few years. Our mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and then a separate lung cancer in
2015 at the same time my younger sister Denise was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Mom and Denise went through cancer treatments together. Sadly though , we lost our mom in 2017 after a long heroic battle. Denise left her career and took care of our mom through her treatments as well as mom's, always putting other's first. We also lost Our loving sister Donna as well during this difficult time .
Denise had some post treatment complications that has chronically affected her lungs, heart, and caused chronic lymphedema that is painful and will not go away without additional treatments.
In 2018, we received the difficult news that Denise was diagnosed with a second cancer – endometrial/cervical. Denise’ oncologist is concerned about her having had TWO hormonally driven cancers and feels it is important that they be treated aggressively.
After Denise’s second diagnoses, she went through surgery and treatments that created some scary side-effects that affected her heart.
Denise has been on a healing journey for over 5 years and it has taken a toll on many things. Denise has not been able to work, and the loss of
income and ongoing medical expenses has been devastating.
Denise is hopeful that she can start back to some part-time work and is working on it, but still has some treatments, ongoing testing, Dr appointments, and daily routines she needs to follow to help her body heal that make that not possible just yet .
Denise has a diverse and supportive team of doctors that are trying to use all means necessary to keep her well , but some of the treatments are
either not fully covered or not covered by insurance at all - despite being scientifically and clinically shown to improve patient outcomes
If you could please take time to share with people that you think would like to help us make these treatments available to her. You can share by
text, email, facebook messenger.
We are hoping to surprise Denise and Steve and would like to keep it from their Facebook . We are really hoping to just help her get the needed
treatments and get back on her feet .
There is a lot of healing that comes from friends and family and other humans helping another family in crisis. Something magical happens when we all pool together with our many hearts - we can make the load a little lighter for those that need it.
Here are more specifics
Among other treatments, Denise needs to do 40-60 treatments of hyperbaric oxygen which costs $200 for each treatment and it is one of the
few things that have been shown to help the lingering physical effects of the radiation treatments . All of the treatments are time intensive,
physically, emotionally and financially exhausting.
We often think that insurance will cover all that is needed to treat and heal cancer in the United States, but the truth is, a significant number of
families (over 40+ %) exhaust life-savings, lose jobs, can't work because of post-treatment complications, file bankruptcy, have ongoing
(long-term) expenses, and deductibles. Healing cancer is a long-term marathon, which many don't realize and there are ongoing needs that are
simply either not covered or adequately covered by insurance.
Statistically, it has been shown that the best outcomes from cancer happen when patients use integrative approaches and tools to heal, this requires using tools in all the toolboxes to support the body THROUGH and AFTER some of the harsh and long-term effects of treatments and surgeries.
Cancer is something that you have to also be vigilant with for many years after diagnoses, and it is an ongoing healing process to stay well.
Honestly - the real work of staying well happens AFTER surgery and treatment and for a cancer patient and their families - that are trying to explore all the options. It becomes a life-long commitment and journey.
Denise has always been great at helping others but not great at asking for help. After talking with her medical team it has become very clear that in
order to keep Denise cancer free it is suggested she does certain treatments that we want to help her get. We want to keep her on this planet for a
very long time! She is a gift of love and an inspiration to myself and many others .
In deep gratitude – and love
