I am writing this for my sweet, sweet, sister in law and her family. 2 years ago almost to the day Denise was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and started treatment for stage 1 which included Chemo, Radiation, and a Double Mastectomy. At the same time Madison, her youngest daughter was undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumor that was right next to her brain stem. Madison’s surgery went flawlessly and her tumor was benign. Denise’s treatment began and we were very confident that all things were fine. Many of you were so kind back in 2015, and contributed to their "GoFundme" account that I had made for them at the time which helped their family so much, Thank You…..It helped to pay medical bills that were not covered by insurance, which many of you know can be astronomical. Fortunately their insurance covered many things, and in combination with your generosity, they were able to avoid most of the long term, lingering debt associated with medical treatments such as these.
Back in February 2017, Denise went in for a regular checkup with her Oncologist and conveyed that she had had some uncomfortable pain in her upper abdomen area. They agreed that a CT scan would be a great idea
just to put everybody’s mind at ease. Unbeknownst
to them, Dr. Lund had expanded the scan. This scan discovered a tumor in Denise’s liver. He scheduled a biopsy to check it out and see if it was benign or cancerous and they discovered that Denise’s Breast cancer had metastasized to her liver. They also learned that this type of cancer in the liver is INCURABLE. Devastation is an understatement! They also learned that the average survival rate for this type and location of the cancer is 12-18 months. They chose to get a 2nd opinion from the University of Washington but her insurance company denied that request. Then they tried to get a 2nd opinion from Swedish, and initially Group Health denied that one too. A couple days later after many phone calls from them and her Oncologist, they reluctantly agreed to the 2nd opinion at Swedish. Unfortuantely, the insurance company immediately informed them that they would not approve or pay for any treatments at Swedish. During their meeting at Swedish, they discovered that there is a clinical trial available for Denise, and that based on the tests they did on the tumor that had been biopsied, a specific protein is present that allows Denise to participate. The Swedish Oncologist Dr. Ellis also suggested in the meantime until everything gets organized and put together to be able to start the clinical trial, that she should start Chemotherapy treatment with her Oncologist Dr. Lund in Spokane. So the order was put in to start Erubilin. Which is the Chemotherapy recommended by Dr. Ellis. Immediately her insurance company called to let them know that they DENIED covering that drug, saying that she needed to try 3 other Chemotherapy drugs first. It is absolutely horrible that Group Health is denying coverages for someone who has a Terminal disease. Of all of the Chemotherapy drugs available, Erubilin, according to Dr. Ellis, is one of the best Chemotherapy drugs available to prolong Denise’s life. This is the main goal of using Chemotherapy to treat this particular type and location of this cancer. But it is not a cure as there is no known cure at this point. The clinical trial is Denise’s best option at this point for any kind of long term survival past the 12-18 months. Group Health will not pay for this clinical trial and it will be their responsibility to pay for whatever the clinical trial research team will not cover. This could potentially climb well into the six figures which is the main reason I am putting this "GoFundme" account together for them once again. Anything that you can contribute will make a difference in their lives, and will also help reduce Denise’s stress which will contribute in a positive way to her SURVIVAL. Thank you so much for your consideration and lets help this family save their wife, mom and glamma. My sister in a law is an amazingly strong woman and for those of you who know her, she is handling these mountains like the rockstar she is. Our entire family is devastated by this diagnosis and it is by God's grace and mercy that we are staying strong in our faith and praying for a miracle. Denise has so much of her story left to live and we are forever grateful for your donation and ask fervently for your prayer and that you would be please forward/share this with your friends, family, and colleagues in your address books or FB accounts. Many small donations have the potential to be life changing to this family, for our family. God bless you and our sincerest gratitude for your help.
