Our start to 2022 was devastating when our mom, Denise, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Liver Cancer). Upon visiting the Oncologist, we quickly learned that this type of cancer didn’t have many treatment options given how far advanced the cancer was. By the end of January, she began an oral chemo Nivolumab, taking the lowest dose. After 1 month her liver enzymes continued to rise and her Oncologist decided it was too much of a risk because it could potentially put her into liver failure and took her off of the chemo. The only alternative option, immunotherapy, was also deemed too risky by her Oncologist. In February, her doctors gave her 6 months to live and told us to call hospice. As a family, we were not willing to accept that news, and that is where our work began. We knew that if we stuck with conventional care our mom would not survive much longer. We began putting together a care team for her and started working with a holistic nutritionist who specialized in cancer, in addition to consulting with two integrative doctors from TN and TX. We completely overhauled her diet and started cooking fresh, organic foods, removing anything processed. We began a strict supplement protocol, experimenting with unconventional treatments. After a couple of months, she began improving. She lost weight, her energy, appetite, and mobility increased and some of the side effects of the cancer disappeared. While there have been some ups and downs, and many hospital stays, it is now July, 6 months after her initial diagnosis and she is currently stable. Mom’s integrative/holistic doctors are not covered by insurance and it's starting to become very costly to continue her protocol. We are considering traveling to Texas for alternative treatment if she continues to be stable and show improvements. This treatment plan is approximately 3 months costing $5,000 per week, which does not include all the expenses of traveling. We are asking for our friends and family’s support in helping us to continue fighting for our mom as she defies the odds.
