Hi, my name is Denise, and this is my puppy, Steve — an Australian Labradoodle in training to become my psychiatric service dog.
Over the years, my world has slowly and quietly grown smaller. Things that once felt normal — driving, working, meeting friends, even stepping outside — began to feel harder and harder. At first, I told myself I was just tired or anxious, but eventually I realized my life had started shrinking around me.
The world outside became overwhelming. Every time I tried to leave the house, my chest would tighten, my thoughts would scatter, and it felt like everything around me was happening behind a pane of glass. The fear and dread were so real — so visceral — that I stopped going out unless I absolutely had to.
Staying home felt safe, but it isn't living. It’s frustrating to know you want to get better, to feel capable of more, and still find yourself stuck in the same loop. I went from cutting back my work hours, to taking an indefinite leave, to realizing I hadn’t driven in years. Somewhere along the way, I forgot what it felt like to live freely.
Getting Steve was my first real step toward change. He’s bright, intuitive, and curious. Even now, he helps me get out of bed, stick to some sort a routine, and find small reasons to go outside. With professional training, he’ll learn to recognize signs of panic, create physical space for me in public settings, and assist with daily tasks that have become difficult on my own.
Steve represents hope — the possibility of rebuilding a life that isn’t ruled by fear, but by connection, confidence, and independence.
How Funds Will Be Used
All funds raised will go directly toward Steve’s professional service dog training and essential related expenses.
Here’s a breakdown of how funds will be used:
- Professional psychiatric service dog training: approximately $5,500 + GST per year (Steve may require up to two years of training, depending on his progress).
- Transportation to weekly training sessions: about $65-80 per round trip.
- Basic training equipment and certification fees: roughly $300–$500 for essentials like vests, leads, and public access testing materials.
- Assessment and Certification Fees: $250
- Platform and POS Fees; $200-300
All regular care costs — food, veterinary visits, and daily needs — will be covered by me. This fundraiser is solely to make Steve’s service dog training and accessibility possible.
Other Ways to Support
If you’re not in a position to donate, I completely understand — sharing this page or spreading the word also helps more than you’d think.
I’m also doing what I can to support Steve’s care and training costs. I’m open to odd jobs, taking on small freelance projects, and exploring remote or flexible work options I can manage from home. If you know someone who could use help with writing, digital marketing, or creative projects, please feel free to reach out — every bit helps.
Your support, in any form, makes a real difference.
Thank You
Asking for help has never been easy for me. I’ve tried to manage on my own — even when it meant secretly struggling. But I’m learning that healing also means letting yourself be seen, and allowing others to help when they want to.
Every contribution, no matter the size, brings me and Steve one step closer to rebuilding a life shaped by freedom rather than fear. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for being part of this journey. Your support means more than I can say — it gives me hope that change is possible, one small, steady step at a time.
