Russell Banks: Even as I Continue is a documentary I am now in the process of completing. The film is a look at the life and work of this important American author, whose novels – including Continental Drift, Affliction, The Sweet Hereafter and The Book of Jamaica– have gained a worldwide audience and been successfully adapted for the screen. Cloudsplitter, his masterpiece about abolitionist John Brown, is about to become a television series and trigger a much-needed national dialogue about slavery, race, and political polarization and violence.
I already have many hours of interviews with Banks, as well as with fellow writers like William Kennedy about Banks as a writer and person. I need $4,000 to cover the remaining costs to get to the next level, including travel, equipment rental, editing, and other post-production expenses.
I am a veteran filmmaker who has directed and produced several critically acclaimed documentaries over the last 30 years, including Howard Zinn: You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train, Nelson Algren: The End Is Nothing, The Road is All and Peace Has No Borders. This new film will be the first in-depth look at one of the major voices of our time, a writer whose sharp intelligence and historical awareness can help us better understand these turbulent times, and whose deep empathy and compassion can help bridge the divisions in our society.
Russell Banks is a novelist you should know about, one who deserves greater exposure. This film will help him get that attention, and your contributions can make it possible. Thank you.
