Yesterday, our loved brother and friend, Demell Warren, unexpectedly passed away at home. While his passing was sudden, Demell courageously battled genetic heart failure for the past 10 years.

Demell was deeply loved and respected throughout the Baltimore community. He brought joy, laughter, and encouragement everywhere he went. To his mom, brother, and everyone who knew him, he was truly a breath of fresh air. Even as his health went up and down over the past year, Demell continued to be a light, lifting up those around him.

On the night of his passing, I received a call from my sister screaming that Mel was gone. I drove as fast as I could, praying it wasn’t true, only to be faced with the heartbreaking reality that I could not say goodbye.

As we grieve this tremendous loss, we are now faced with the unexpected burden of funeral expenses. Because of his pre-existing medical condition, Demell was unable to secure life insurance. We want to give him the proper memorial service he deserves, one that reflects his impact on his family, friends, and community.

What Is Genetic Heart Failure?

Genetic heart failure, also called inherited heart disease, is a condition where heart failure is caused by mutations in genes that control the heart’s structure and function. These mutations can be passed down through families, affecting the way the heart muscle works.

Over time, these genetic conditions can lead to heart failure, a state where the heart cannot pump blood efficiently enough to meet the body’s needs. Unlike acquired heart failure, which can result from lifestyle factors or other diseases, genetic heart failure is rooted in inherited traits and can impact people at younger ages.
