Della Rae Vigil

Hi. I’m Sonya, and I’m fundraising for our friend Della Rae Vigil. I’d like to do this and respect Della Rae’s privacy at the same time because she’d never forgive me if I didn’t create some sort of mystery while telling her story, being the avid reader that she is. I’ll even try to add some romance if I can. But, this will definitely be an unusual love story because, again, Della Rae would never forgive me if I didn’t make her story interesting.

Typical love stories go something like boy meets girl. They fall in love, blah, blah, blah-whatever. That’s not Della Rae’s story because her heart is just too big. She has too much love to give to be limited in any way. Instead, her story is about a love for, literally, an entire school district and everything about its history. If you know Della Rae, you know that she is the most loyal, die-hard Dons fan. She lives green and gold. She was a student and graduate of WLV schools and later became a teacher and cheer coach at WLVMS. She started and ended her decades long career there which is such a rarity in teaching. She was so honored when she was chosen to be the Grand Marshal for West’s homecoming a few years ago, and she continues in her unparalleled relationship with West Las Vegas schools even now as the ticket taker and cashier at Dons’ home games. It’s difficult to put into words exactly what West means to Della Rae and vice versa. The closest approximation I can think of really is love. Della Rae loves West and West loves her. No broken hearts here. Just a girl who found her niche at WLV and made it her legacy.

This brings me to the reason for this GoFundMe. Della Rae is in need of assistance because of a medical issue she’s dealing with. Many of you are Della Rae’s former students or colleagues. Many of you are her dear friends. Absolutely and without a doubt, regardless of blood, if you went to, taught at, or worked at West at any point, in any capacity, you are part of the Dons’ and Della Rae’s family. She needs her family right now.
