Sunday, April 10th, 2022, early afternoon, an electrical fire broke out in the garage corner while my little sister was washing clothes. My mom alerted my stepdad, who was resting in their room. By the time he ran to the garage, it was engulfed in billowing black smoke and fire. Quickly he was able to move his car parked in the driveway while my sister grabbed the small dogs. They all escaped with the clothes on their backs. Eddy ran to alert their elderly neighbors to vacate their connecting home.
Thank God! Everyone is safe! The home they lived in for over 18 years suffered significant structural damage and is now uninhabitable due to the aftermath of fire and water. The cost for restoration and rebuilding may exceed what is covered by home and HOA insurance, but their most urgent need is temporary housing, insurance funds for emergency housing and personal items are limited. So far, insurance is estimating a year to rebuild. They are starting from scratch in the interim and will need to pay for stable housing during the rebuild. They hope to find stable housing by next Tuesday, April 19th, when their hotel stay ends.
This is a devasting time for my little sister, Caridad she is a junior in high school with a prom next month. My mom has health issues, and she is in her last semester on track to graduate from Cal State Eastbay with a B.A. in Human Development —after 40 years of returning to school. These are tough times for my family to rebuild their lives.
Funds will be used to pay for a deposit and rent either a hotel/AirBnB/ or apartment for the next year and personal items. Support from the community would be greatly appreciated as they start to put the pieces of their lives back together.
