Dela’s Surgery & Recovery

Hi there! I’m Dela! I’m a beautiful, sassy, sweet pibble (maybe a pibble mix— Dad rescued me from the shelter when I was just a few months old). I love nothing more than playing with my doggy siblings, modeling my pajama collection, following Mom around the kitchen in hopes of getting treats (she’s weak to my puppy dog eyes), making friends with every hooman I meet, and cuddling the heck out of anyone with an open lap (What? I am a lap dog, after all!)

 

 

So basically, I’m perfect in every way. Trust me, I’m flawless!*

 

*Okay, okay, fine. Maybe not 100% flawless. I might actually have a host of lifelong medical issues. But my personality is still 100% perfect in spite of everything I’ve been through!

Dela’s people checking in (mostly because it’s very strange to speak in first person as a dog undergoing the following surgery, haha). On Thursday, Dela has to have an episioplasty. That’s basically a vulva reconstructive surgery. She was born with a badly recessed vagina and extra vulva skin, so bacteria gets trapped easily. With her severe environmental allergies and dermatitis, the skin in the folds has hardened and creates another bacteria trap. This double whammy of has caused chronic UTIs since she was 2. It started at one or two a year and unfortunately increased until it was once a month. Prescription diets, two baths a week, and antibiotics that make her sick all only create temporary relief from the painful infections. We are hoping and praying that this surgery prevents future UTIs and helps Dela live the happy, healthy life this beautiful goofball deserves.

 

The only downside is the price of the procedure. The low estimate before pain killers and aftercare is just shy of $5,000, the high estimate is in the $7,000 ballpark. This surgery is going to drain our savings and emergency funds. Our poor girl is also suffering from a systemic infection and needs a lot of blood work and intense antibiotics the next few weeks. Of course she’s more than worth every penny, but any little bit helps immensely.
