Defibrillator for Wrekenton

Donation protected
*UPDATE*:  Excellent news: The fundraising target has been reached and the defibrillator can be purchased!

Thank-you so much to everyone who has donated to help Wrekenton Methodist Community Church raise funds to install a defibrillator on the external wall of the church building in Wrekenton, Gateshead.

We have had great support from residents and businesses in and around Wrekenton plus donations from groups of people, our local councillors in Lamesley and High Fell wards and the North East Ambulance Service.  We have raised enough money to purchase the defibrillator and some spare parts,  install it,  and cover annual running costs for a few years.

A defibrillator is an automatic device that can be used to help resuscitate someone who has had a cardiac arrest. By mounting it on the external wall of the church it means the people of Wrekenton have access to this device should a cardiac event occur to you, a family member or a work colleague. There are not many defibrillators in our area and yet heart disease is common.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) explains why community defibrillators are important:
"A victim’s chance of survival falls by around 7 to 10 percent with every minute that defibrillation is delayed, and therefore getting a defibrillator to patients earlier could mean that more people survive a cardiac arrest. Ambulances carry these devices, but having one in Wrekenton community means that it can be used in the first few vital minutes, following a cardiac arrest".
