For the past two years, we watched our mothers health begin to deteriorate. She began losing weight very rapidly for unexplained reasons and would have syncope episodes where she would pass out. Despite this, doctors could not seem to give our family an answer except for the possibility of Addison’s disease- a rare disease that affects the bodies ability to produce steroids and hormones. While this was a possibility, she was never given proper treatment or diagnosis, with doctors giving conflicting answers. On October 9th, 2023, our mother was admitted to the ER. She was intubated and we were told she was in septic shock with multi system organ failure. Her chances of surviving were slim. We were later told this was likely and Addisonian crisis, caused by her untreated Addison’s disease. We watched her slowly come back to life over the next two weeks in the ICU. She was taken off the ventilator and moved to another part of the hospital where the real work began. She had to relearn to eat and drink and her body was too weak to move. She was readmitted to the hospital on numerous occasions to address different issues. She was in an in patient rehab where she finally stood up for the first time! She also got pretty good at walking using the walker. However, after 23 days in the rehab, insurance has stated that they will not cover anymore for in patient rehab. Our mother has gangrene on her toes, and still needs assistance walking on the walker. Additionally, there was damage to her right hand to where she now has minimal function. Until she is able to get further in her recovery, she will need help with everyday things and functions. While she owns a Homecare company, her being gone has affected the business to where there is not enough money being made to cover the caregivers needed to help. Additionally, the medical expenses for the ICU and numerous hospital visits are still expensive despite insurance. This money would help go towards paying for caregivers, keeping Deegan Homecare afloat, and medical bills for the family. Our mother has devoted her life and career to helping others, we now hope that maybe we can help her.
