TLDR: Best friend with MD needs a new wheelchair and other medical equipment that his insurance refuses to cover.
Derek is my best friend. He'll be my best man at my wedding. I've been his companion and helper for almost 6 years now. I remember when I first met him. He was all smiles. I had a hard time understanding him speak and needed some help from his mother, but I could ask him what he said a million times and he would still be smiling and keeping his cool. I remember feeling quite bad thinking he couldnt take advantage of life in the same way others could. Boy, was I wrong.
Derek and I have climbed giant hills, gone on boats and busses and have enjoyed life together. He has ALWAYS been a giver. Never worrying about himself but always trying to help peope. It's one of the reasons I'm so protective of him. Within the time I've been with him, his wheelchair has gone everywhere we have. Now, he cant spend more than an hour in it without being in pain. There have been times where I thought it would fall apart. We were just waiting for his insurance to let him get another one suitable for him. Just the other day, We found out his insurance WILL NOT help him with a new wheelchair. Not only did they decline that (which I'm sure somebody at that insurance company got a pat on the back for) but they also declined new knee immobilizers and a device that would allow him to communicate better. They're now declining all kinds of things he needs. The list goes on. I never thought the day would come where Derek would actually have to ask me for something. He needs my help. He needs OUR help. Please help me get Derek out of his recliner and into the world with the rest of us and have the quality of life he deserves. Anything past our goal will go to a Handicap accessable van. . It may be a shot in the dark, but I'm willing to take that shot. If you have any questions about Derek, his condition or his needs, feel free to ask! Thank you so much!
