Dee Shapiro's Medical Expense Fund

Donation protected
This past Spring, Deanna (known as Dee by family and friends) and her husband Scott Shapiro of Latham, NY were passengers in a tragic car accident. While Scott was able to escape with minor injuries, Dee was left a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the shoulders down due to a serious spinal cord injury.

Dee is a loving wife and active mother of two school age sons and even under her current circumstances, can always bring a smile to your face. This terrible and unexpected event has cut her career as a Dental Hygienist short and left her and her family devastated. They are all still in good spirits though and working hard to adjust for a new future.  The Shapiro family will not allow this tragic accident to defeat them, yet it has become clear the costs involved for Dee’s care is coming with an insurmountable price tag.

After five long months of hospitalization the Shapiros were finally able to bring Dee home, but she continues to require around the clock care for the foreseeable future. In order for her to live at home with her family, the Shapiro's are facing significant expenses related to extensive home modifications, home health aides, uncovered expenses such as a wheelchair van and other accessibility equipment, and insurance deductibles and copays.

The sum of all these unexpected expenses have been adding up rapidly and have become, as most would imagine, a bit overwhelming.  The combination of existing and pending expenses have exhausted their savings, requiring the Shapiros to start liquidating Deanna’s retirement funds and seek government assistance for uncovered medical costs.  As the Shapiro’s navigate through one of the toughest parts of their lives, supporting the family with anything you can give will truly go a long way and will not go ungratified.  A Special Needs Trust has been established by Dee's brother-in-law, Todd Shapiro, to ensure donations are allocated towards her care.

The Shapiro’s are so incredibly thankful for the friends and family that have already stepped up to help.  The family also wholeheartedly intends to pay it forward and continue to give back, just as they always have.

Thank you so much for your consideration!
