Help us honor our father, Steven Winn, and ALL crossing guards, by supporting the official recognition of January 28 as National Crossing Guard Day.
Our father was a dedicated crossing guard in Layton, Utah, who was tragically struck and killed by a negligent driver after safely crossing a group of children. Affectionately known as the Crossing Guard Santa, he devoted his life to serving his community with kindness, patience, and pride.
In working to honor his legacy, we discovered there was no unified, nationally recognized day to celebrate crossing guards and the vital role they play in keeping children safe. We applied to National Day Calendar — the leading authority on honorary national days — to officially recognize January 28 as National Crossing Guard Day. Our first application was denied, but we refused to give up.
Over the past year, we gathered signatures through our Change.org petition, collected letters of endorsement from leading school safety organizations, and received an official proclamation from the Governor’s Office of Utah. Thanks to this support, our second application was approved!
However, we did not realize there is a $6,000 registration fee required to finalize and establish the day officially. This fundraiser will help cover that cost and allow us to continue raising awareness for school zone safety, and the essential role crossing guards play every day to protect our children.
Tragically, our father’s story is not unique. Most recently, three more crossing guards — John, Katy, and Jean — lost their lives while helping children cross safely. We hope National Crossing Guard Day will not only honor these heroes, but also bring greater awareness to school zone safety, driver awareness, and the dangers crossing guards face.
Thank you for helping us honor not only our father’s memory, but all crossing guards serving their communities.
