On the evening of Dec 20, 2019, Declan and two of his friends had just finished donating plasma and decided they were going to relax for the rest of the evening. They decided to spend their Friday night much like other young men their age—all they wanted was to spend the night playing video games into the wee hours of the morning. They were on their way to pick up additional controllers for their evening of gaming when a masked gunman approached their car in an armed robbery attempt. Frightened, Declan and his friends ran from the car making every effort possible to flee the gunman. What happened would change his life and those that love him forever.
Declan was shot in the groin as he tried to run away. The bullet entered his groin and Declan subsequently bled out causing loss of oxygen to his brain. When Declan arrived at the hospital, he was technically declared DOA. But God had other plans. Despite being declared DOA, Declan’s trauma surgeon started to massage his heart to beat again—and it did! Declan’s family was told that he would likely not make it through the night. But God had other plans. Declan was moved from the surgical intensive care unit to the progressive care unit within two weeks. Due to the severity of his injuries, Declan has traumatic brain injury and he is considered minimally conscious.
Declan has a long journey ahead of him. But he is strong and a fighter. As we continue to pray for a full recovery, we believe that God will continue to work miracles and that our beloved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend will fight with all his might. Our family needs to be able to support him for the journey of recovery ahead. Declan needs intensive, aggressive rehabilitation that cannot be provided in Maryland. After much research and visits to facilities, we have found the best place for Declan and will be moving him to Chicago to receive critical rehabilitation. The facility provides cutting edge technology and has demonstrated outstanding recoveries for patients facing similar uphill battles. We have hope and remain steadfast in our faith.
We are asking for your help to offset the medical costs not covered by insurance. We also need help with transportation and lodging while we support him in his journey of rehabilitation in Chicago. Declan is fighting hard and we believe he will recover completely with this rehabilitation. Your support means the world to us. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
