At the end of October, my family’s world turned upside down. My son Declan, just shy of turning 9 months old, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. My wife, Terrie, stayed at Lutheran General Hospital with Declan for 34 days while he underwent his first phase of treatment called induction. This was, and will continue to be, a hard time for my family as we are separated while he is in treatment at the hospital. I stay home with our daughter, Finnleigh, to keep her in a routine and going to school and activities. We have a great support system with family and friends jumping in to help us when we don’t even realize that we need help.
We just received the amazing news that Declan has no cancer in his system! We are so blessed and ecstatic! Though Declan is clear right now, we still have a long journey ahead of us with 3.5 years of treatment. On Monday, Declan and my wife go back to the hospital for another 4 weeks of chemotherapy. This will be our “new normal” going forward. #SuperDeclan is my hero!
