To know DeCarlis Wilson was to be blessed by kindness and charisma.
D (or "D.C.") was raised in South Los Angeles, the youngest of 4 in an underserved community. In spite of his environment, he gravitated to computer science, excelled academically and was the Valedictorian of his High School. DeCarlis received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Southern California where he came out of his shell and made lifelong friends. Upon graduating, he went on to a successful career in computer programming and Product Management. The products he built were seen and used by millions, and he was just getting started.
D's drive to life knew no bounds. He was a fixture at Coachella and Burning Man, visited dozens of countries, and made thousands of friends around the world. Handsome and charismatic, it was natural for him to command a crowd or bring complete strangers into his circle.
On January 26th, DeCarlis was killed in a vehicle collision 2 blocks from his home in San Francisco. This fundraiser is to support his mother, Shedralyn Pullum, in paying for the expenses related to his passing and his funeral. We will post the date and location of the funeral in the coming days.
In 30 short years, DeCarlis built successful products, traveled the world and brought happiness to countless friends:
"I grew up in South Los Angeles, alongside other low-income families. None of my friends or neighbors were in technical fields. Against all odds, I ignored the social conditioning and norms of my environment and invented a different future: based on my goals, based on role models I had read about rather than experienced firsthand. I have come to understand the only way to earn success is to work excruciatingly hard and follow my instincts. The world is a big place, and so are its problems, but when you break them down, you see them for what they are...solvable."
