Debt run up in my name

Heya, I'm Thrax. Long story short, I'm facing a debt someone else ran up, and while I'm trying to prove its not mine, I'm still being held liable for it and face a pretty imminent threat of bayliffs at the front door. I don't live alone, and I can't trust them not to take the equipment I use for work (PC and camera gear) or the stuff that belongs to other people here.

A few years back, I opened up a couple credits cards for the express purpose of building my credit up. I probably opened too many, since after using one a couple of times, I forgot about it. Between then and now, I've changed addresses, phone and my number which meant that when a letter came through to me a couple weeks ago saying a warrant had been issued for repayment of a £4000~ debt, from a credit card I couldn't recall, I was pretty confused and scared.

After a bit of digging, contacting those responsible, it'd became clear that through some means, my card, or account, were compromised and used to run up charges. I'd missed the attempts from the companies to contact me cause the whole moved address and contact details things and it'd been sold on since to a debt company. I contacted and tried to explain the reasoning, but they held me liable for not reporting it sooner and said unless I could prove it wasn't me who did it, it would stand. All the payments were in my generalised area, so it makes it pretty convincing that it was me.

So, while I'm working trying to prove that it wasn't me and trying to escalate things to local regulatory authorities, all of that takes time and with the warrant for colleciton already issued, they're not gonna stop unnless I start making payments. The only problem is minimum payments they're accepting are in the range of £500+ and things have already been rough, so coming up with that much every month just isn't feasible between pressures of rent, vet care for my dog who has a chronic health condition, and then the whole surges in cost have living that have happened over the last couple years, the combined sum of which have steadily degraded my savings too.

The help from this would help me pay for it without having to sell any of the kit I need to carry on working.

I know I messed up here by not taking better care to be more aware. Just not forgetting to change over contact details would've made this go away much sooner and with much less harm. There's a lot of reasons I could give for that but it doesn't change the reality of the situation.
