Debbie's GROW - MEDA Ghana Project

Debbie Beckman -
I will be going to Ghana, Africa on November 22, 2017 with a 14 member team, in support of the MEDA GROW project. The team consists of at least on front-line staff from peopleCare Long term Care homes, along with their community partners from Pro-Resp, Seasons’ Care Dieticians, Pundit (IT) and two representatives from MEDA. The team will be returning on December 3, 2017.

The GROW (Greater Rural Opportunities for Women) is a project in which the goal is to have families in northern Ghana have nutritious food throughout the year, as women increase agricultural production, strengthen their links to markets, diversifying the food they produce and also understand more about nutrition. Many Ghanaians, particularly in the north, still live in poverty and are regularly prone to food insecurity. There will be an estimated 20,000 women farmers and their families that will benefit from the support through this project. With the help of MEDA, the women are trained both on making sound nutritional choices for their families, but also provided with financial literacy training, allowing these women to better manage their resources and to re-invest to expand their productive activities.

During my trip to Ghana, I will have the opportunity to visit the farms where the women are growing Soya Beans and follow their processes from their farms through to the agro-processors in Wa, where soymilk, soy-based products and soya cake and oil are then made and exported.

The costs, to take part as a member of this team, is $4199.50. To date I have raised $1748.00, through selling home-made chocolate items, Strawberry pies, organizing a 5Km walk and some personal donations. Currently I have Three Items (Original Painting from a Local Artist; IPad mini and a Pineapple Charmed Aroma candle), with tickets selling for $5.00 each. The draw for this will occur on September 1, 2017.
I have also been actively working with our corporate teams, in which we have raised $100,000.00 to support the MEDA project in Ghana, through the Women Walking to Grow, where both Elaine Shantz, president of poepleCare, and Miriam Turnbull, COO of ProResp, walked the entire Bruce Trail during the month of July, and another 38 walkers joined them for the last 20 to 100 km, ending this Trek on July 31, 2017 in Tobermory. For every $1.00 that is raised for this MEDA GROW project, the Canadian Government has committed $9.00, in support. (together with our $100,000.00 and the governments’ commitment, it is now $1,000,000.00!!!)

I would appreciate your support in helping me reach my financial commitment, which in turn, will ensure my participation in this trip in November.
