Hi, I am Nancy, Deb's friend and I want to tell you about her situation. I sure hope you can help her.
Last Tuesday afternoon, October 20th, Deb Swiney's life changed. She woke up with excruciating stomach pain, like she had diverticulitis. It was horrible, but she got in touch with Church Health who sent her to Methodist Hospital for a CT Scan. Severe ruptured diverticulitis and torn intestine. She needed major life-saving emergency surgery immediately. At 4:43 she sent me a cheerful text, letting me know what was going on, and asking for prayers. Yes cheerful, because that's who our girl is. Even when she is hanging on for life.
She made it through the operation like the queen she is, but the pain continues as she is recovering. They had her on morphine, but she is suffering pretty bad and at one week later, we are JUST FINDING OUT that she will be released today.
And, on top of the suffering pain, she has worry on her mind. She is very disappointed that she lost her medical insurance last month, and she has never been in this situation before. Healthcare.gov canceled her because the IRS hasn't gotten her paperwork back that was sent in twice. It's just a nightmare.
She's going to have to wear a colostomy bag for about six months, and then have reversal surgery. The doctors have talked about sending her to a rehabilitation center, but since she has no insurance they may not be able to. She is worried about going to one of those places you hear about.... she has performed in many of those places and she knows first hand. She would prefer to be able to recover at home, with her kitties. Advocates are trying to set up home care to check in on her. This is some major life threatening surgery she had, and basically she is now on her own due to lack of insurance.
I told her I was going to set up this GoFundMe for her, and she is so very thankful for your help. I am not sure how much we will need to raise, and we know it's hard times for most. Any amount you can contribute is appreciated.
Thanks a bunch, and I will give you an update as soon as there is one.
PS. In case you are not familiar with Deb, she has been the boss lady at Archer Records for 17 years, she is a former backup singer for Al Green, and is the main person responsible for a thriving Sunset Jazz Concert Series at Court Square that she produces. She is loved by everyone, and is an essential Memphis musician. She's part of the group of girl singers I call BackHos and has sung backup on a number of recordings, and after so many years of supporting others, she released her own album in 2017.
