Deb Hoagland's Road to Recovery!

Donation protected
I’ve created this GoFundMe page for all of us who love and adore Deb Hoagland and feel helpless in our efforts to DO SOMETHING to support her.

As many of you are aware, last September, Deb was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to her liver and lymph nodes. When Deb got cancer she decided, go big or go home – she went straight to Stage 4. She had surgery to remove the tumor in her colon and hung out in the hospital for 11 days admiring the 30 staples they used to put her back together.

Starting in October she endured eight rounds of chemotherapy and opted to get almost EVERY. SINGLE. SIDE. EFFECT. you can get from chemo.  On the upside, it turns out she has a perfectly shaped dome so when she lost her hair, she still looks great!

With chemo treatments presently on hold, she is currently feeling pretty good but needs to have another (specialty) surgery to remove two tumors that are on her liver.  She has met with three surgeons, two in San Diego and the third at Sloan Kettering in New York.  This surgeon completely disagrees that her initial diagnosis was considered incurable.

After careful evaluation of all her options/surgeons, she has chosen to have this specialty surgery at UCSD in San Diego.  Her surgery is scheduled for Monday, June 4 (Shane’s birthday!).  I bet some of you are wondering…why not get a liver transplant?  Guess what?  She’s not eligible with a Stage 4 diagnosis. Damn.

To add insult to injury or insult to cancer, UCSD is NOT IN HER MEDICAL NETWORK.  Damn again.  While some of this surgery will be covered, Deb and Bill will be responsible for what probably will be a lot of out-of-pocket expenses.

While making this decision was extremely difficult, she is confident that this is the right choice, in-or-out of her medical network.   I saw Deb on the day of the Royal Wedding (no connection whatsoever).  She looks great and has not lost her sense of humor or sarcasm.

Those of you who know Deb well, know that asking for monetary help (or any help) is just not in her nature.  In fact, I was volunteered to talk to her about setting up this Go Fund Me page to raise money because everyone else chickened out.  We have Shane to thank for talking sense in to her and allowing us to help her in a meaningful way.  Any donation you can make, big or small, will go a long way in allowing her to focus on her recovery.

I hope to keep you informed periodically on this page with updates – all good ones!

Thank you.
