Meet Deb Ram, a 72-year-old woman who has spent her life in service to others. For many years, Deb worked full-time providing care for developmentally disabled adults in Marin County. Even after a heart attack five years ago forced her to reduce her hours, she continued showing up for others—at work, in her family, and in the community.
Like many elders on a fixed income in the Bay Area, Deb faced rising costs and housing insecurity. After a housing situation fell apart last year, Deb found herself with no stable place to live. She now resides at Camp Compassion, an unhoused encampment in Marin, while continuing to work part-time in caregiving.
Through it all, Deb remains generous and resilient. She has supported loved ones even in the midst of her own struggle—sometimes to her own detriment. She’s not perfect, but she’s human, and her story is not uncommon for older adults navigating poverty, health issues, and housing loss.
Right now, Deb needs our help.
Her car—a lifeline to her job, medical appointments, and any future housing—is at risk. It needs urgent registration renewal and repairs. Without it, she may lose her remaining income and access to services.
She’s not asking for a handout—just a hand up.
