DEATH OF BELOVED FATHER LEAVES MOTHER TO BE SOLE PROVIDER TO CHILD WITH FRAGILE X (SPECIAL NEEDS) AND SURMOUNTING MEDICAL BILLS
Go fund Me Set Up By: Paige Charles
I have set up this Go Fund Me because my sister Leslie’s family is going through a terrible crisis right now. After a long battle with several serious illnesses over the course of many years, Leslie’s beloved husband Carl recently passed away after having had a massive stroke and a fall that led to multiple brain bleeds. Leslie & Carl have 2 beautiful children; Danielle, who has endured some major health issues but is thankfully doing well now and has been a major source of strength during this difficult time; and Jonathan, who is 30 and who has special needs and lives at home. Leslie is now left to be the sole caretaker for Jonathan who has Fragile X, an inherited form of mental disability which will require him to have supervision, support and care for his entire life. Unfortunately, despite Carl’s hard work and devotion to his family, Leslie is left with mounting bills and uncertainty for her and Jonathan’s future.
Leslie is the kind of person who would never ask for help on her own. So I am here, on her behalf, asking you to please find it in your hearts to give what you can to my sister’s wonderful family who has been dealt a very difficult hand in life and truly needs and deserves your generosity, kindness and support.
Carl was a hardworking solo practitioner Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and an extremely devoted father to Danielle and Jonathan, and husband to Leslie. Despite Carl’s will and determination to provide and care for his family, in the last several years he was not able to work as much because of several very serious debilitating health issues. Carl struggled to maintain his clients first while enduring chemo-like treatments for Hepatitis C (contracted as the result of a faulty blood transfusion after a serious car accident); After that he was diagnosed and treated for Diabetes and then 3 years ago, he was diagnosed with Liver Cancer which recurred at 3 different times, for which he had to endure a major painful and debilitating surgery followed by multiple extremely powerful radiation treatments. In addition, Carl also suffered this year from episodes of Congestive Heart Failure. Through all of this, Carl continually tried to work to provide for his family. They always lived very modestly, never really went out; making do with the basics; their income just going to pay standard monthly bills, high premiums for necessary health care insurance and high out-of-pocket health costs.
Carl was the sole provider for his family, as Leslie was a stay at home mom tending to the needs & schedule of Jonathan, who has always needed a lot. As mentioned above, Jonathan has Fragile X, an inherited form of mental disability, which leaves him with cognitive and developmental disabilities and autistic-like characteristics. While Jonathan is loving, kind, friendly and helpful, he is also very impulsive, extremely hyperactive and unpredictable. He will need constant supervision for his own safety and the safety of others for the rest of his life.
Unfortunately, Carl’s illness, as well as Jonathans special needs over the last 30 years, have taken a toll on my beautiful sister. She has been struggling with her own health issues, which while not life-threatening, are very debilitating and will make it difficult for her to work at this time. Leslie is one of the kindest, sweetest people I know; always happy for everyone else; never bitter about her life being so hard; never judgmental; only loving; never wanting to ask for help.
But they do need help.
They need help to stay in their home; to pay their monthly bills; to pay funeral expenses, to pay their out of pocket deductibles and medical expenses; and to eventually hopefully, some day find a place for Jonathan outside of the home so that he is set up for when Leslie is no longer able to take care of him. The future housing issue for Jonathan is such difficult one—If anyone has any information, suggestions or resources that could help in finding or funding future housing for Jonathan, please email me directly at [email redacted]. That would be such an amazing thing for this family!
Jonathan is a sweet loving boy who will never be able to live on his own. He will never drive or get married, or have children or be able to hold a paying job. He will never be able to do the things that every parent wishes for their child. On top of all this, Carl was Jonathan’s hero, mentor and best friend and Jonathan will need a tremendous amount of support and specialized therapy to navigate his way through his grief and to process this devastating life-changing loss. He is forever a child and needs to be taken care of. With your help, we can make that happen!
My husband, Andrew and I will be helping them as much as we can, as will our sister Karen and her husband, Alan. But you know sometimes it takes a village, and we definitely need a larger village on this one!
We are eternally grateful for any donation you can make. Please also share this link to spread the word. Together we can really make a huge difference in their lives.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your generosity and support.
