Deano's 365 consecutive days running and beyond!
Now that I am well over 200 consecutive days of running I am inviting you to support my journey to 365 days and beyond for an amazing cause!
I first started running in 2015 joining my local running club and regularly attending Parkun. In August 2017 my wife and I became vegan and I continued running with my local club, as expected I was asked lots of questions about how my plant based diet may affect my running performance. Since starting this run streak my running performance has gone from strength to strength, beating my 5k 10k and half marathon personal bests.
It wasn't long before promoting veganism became important enough to me to sign up to Vegan Runners as my main club and represent them at races and Parkrun.
At the start of the year I challenged myself to see if I could run every day and see how long I would be able to maintain the mental commitment and physical endurance. January 28th 2020 will see my 365th consecutive run. You can follow my progress on Strava by searching my name (Deano Evans).
I would be lying if I said that each run was a joy, there are days where I haven't wanted to lace up my shoes and get out the door but looking at the bigger picture has spurred me on. Some days I put it off until the very last minute with Strava recording my run at 11.59pm! Over the last 240 days alongside working full time, we have moved house and my mother had a 2 month spell in hospital.
So what spurs me on? The day before participating in the Brighton 10k in November 2018 I attended a screening of Fiona Oakes' documentary Running for Good. Fiona runs the Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary home to around 500 rescued animals, both domestic and ex-farm and is a 4 time Guinness World Record Holder, winning both the Antarctic Ice Marathon and the North Pole Marathon as well as competing in the“toughest footrace on earth,” the Marathon Des Sables, a 250km race through the Sahara Desert. To make these feats even more impressive (if that were possible!) there was a time in Fiona's life when she was going to be registered as disabled, having only one kneecap. Fiona is also a retaine fire-fighter and has been vegan since the age of 6. Why does Fiona put herself through the toughest races in the world? For the animals and to promote veganism. No matter how tough you think you have it, the animals have it much tougher. The next morning I ran the race totally fired up and inspired by Fiona's documentary easily achieving the sub 40 PB I had set for myself.
If you are looking for some inspiration look no further than the documentary 'Running for Good' and please help me to help the Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary with their day to day running of the sanctuary, caring for the rescued animals who have found their forever home thanks to Fiona. Every single penny donated goes towards the cost of feeding and caring for the animals.
