And so it's come to this. I hate the fact that I can't just do this on my own, but here we are. As some of you may know, my home of 20 years has become basically unlivable in recent years, and for the sake of my mental health, I need to leave ASAP. The short version of what's going on:
- A mentally ill person in the SRO next door, whose window is directly across from mine, has a habit of throwing things out of his window, and since mid-2020, he has broken my windows approximately a dozen times. One time he threw something containing urine, coating my entire apartment in urine, which required a professional steam cleaning to remove. Between my property management, the police (building management wanted to involve the cops, not me), and the nonprofit who owns the SRO, they all have absolutely refused to do anything to stop this person. I have dealt with the San Francisco Tenant's Union and spoken at length with a tenants rights lawyer, all to no avail. I live in constant stress from never knowing when the next projectile will shatter glass all over my apartment. I have most of my windows basically boarded up at this point.
- Many cockroach infestations over the years, persisting despite professional treatment
- Currently there's a major mouse infestation. I've caught and released 10 mice in the last 2 months or so, and there are still countless others. The presence of all these pests has me constantly on edge and feeling like I'm living in filth.
I've been applying for the low income housing lotteries for about 5 years, with no luck. Actually, I did have an opportunity almost 2 years ago that I ended up turning down because the apartment is much smaller and much more expensive than my current one. However, I've experienced so much stress in the last 2 years in this apartment, I regret that decision. I've been offered another opportunity in the same building, so I've decided to take it. Even if I don't end up getting this apartment for some reason, I have some other options in the Tenderloin.
Financially that will require a deposit (should be about $1500), and hiring movers ($$$?). I don't really know how much it would cost to move a very cluttered studio apartment to another studio apartment 2 miles away, but I'm estimating about $1000? I also need to get a storage bed frame at some point, but I can worry about that later.
