I had a fateful encounter with a beautiful 11 year old girl year on Friday. I was in a meeting with the Mayor of Toledo,Ohio at the YMCA and as we walked out of the meeting this beautiful kid with a huge smile on her face was waiting outside the door of the conference room. She marched right up to me and asked me if that was the Mayor and I told her it was. She said "sir, can you please introduce me to the Mayor?" Of course, I said "YES!" First of all, what 11 year old is civic minded enough and incredibly excited to meet the Mayor? Well my friend De'Azhia was. So she got that introduction to the Mayor (Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz) and she began to shed tears of joy. She said it was the happiest day of her life. Her granny is the janitor at the YMCA and De'Azhia hangs out there after school because it's a safe place. She got a photo with the Mayor and was completely overwhelmed as the Mayor engaged her. I followed up with her Granny and took she and De'Azhia out to lunch 2 days later. Turns out De'Azhia's mother died of lupus two years ago when she was 9. Her father has never been in the picture. De'Azhia herself suffers from sickle cell anemia and has very painful episodes with kidney stones and requires IVs and hospitalization from time to time as a result. But if you look at this girl and talk to her you see a beautiful kid with an amazing smile and a brilliance about her. Despite all the life trauma she has experienced at such a young age she gets all A's in school, except in reading comprehension, but lets be honest....who gets an A in reading comprehension? I certainly didn't! She loves math too and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. Due to her mother's death, a lack of funding and transportation and her granny's work schedule, De'Azhia had to switch schools. Her new school is not challenging her and shockingly she has been bullied because she doesn't have a mom like all the other kids. De'Azhia was bullied so badly last week that she told her Granny after school that maybe she'd be better off if she went to join mommy in heaven. To which I said "Oh Hell NO!" This girl is BEAUTIFUL. Engaging. Smart. We have to get De'Azhia in to another school where she can excel and not be bullied and we have to get her Granny a better vehicle so she can be transported effectively. Please help us raise $25,000 to make this all happen. This little girl did nothing wrong and we have the moral imperative to come together as a community to reverse the direction of her life and to ensure that she breaks the cycle of poverty and lives a full and fulfilling life! Please help me in this quest!
