​Wie mij kent, weet dat mijn hart een stukje in Egypte ligt. Ik ben er vaak te vinden en zie daar de twee kanten van het land: de prachtige cultuur, maar helaas ook het diepe leed van de werkpaarden. Paarden die uitgeput, vergeten en soms zwaar mishandeld worden. Maar tussen die schrijnende situaties is er een baken van hoop: Mona Lisa Rescues Hurghada.

​Van Vakantie naar een Missie

​De 25-jarige Rachell Slump kwam als toerist naar Egypte, maar kon haar ogen niet sluiten voor het dierenleed. Ze bleef, en samen met haar man Mohammed, haar vriendin en de moeder van haar vriendin, besloot ze het verschil te maken. Ze runnen een stal waar westerse standaarden van zorg centraal staan, maar hun echte levenswerk is hun rescue: Mona Lisa Rescues Hurghada.

​Liefde alleen is helaas niet genoeg. De kosten voor medische zorg en goed voer zijn enorm. Daarnaast moeten de verwaarloosde dieren vaak worden vrijgekocht van hun eigenaren. Helaas willen deze eigenaren de dieren vaak niet gratis afstaan, zelfs niet als ze er slecht aan toe zijn. Alleen als het na alle inspanningen echt niet anders kan en het dier geen menswaardig bestaan meer kan hebben, is verlossing de allerlaatste optie. De focus ligt altijd op hoop en herstel. Omdat ik dit doel zo belangrijk vind, doe ik zelf ook regelmatig een donatie en neem ik spullen mee voor de paarden wanneer ik naar Egypte ga.

​We weten dat we niet alle paarden in Egypte kunnen redden, maar voor elk paard dat bij Mona Lisa Rescues Hurghada binnenkomt, verandert de hele wereld. Ieder paard is er één.

Dear friends, family, and fellow horse and animal lovers, Those who know me know that a piece of my heart lies in Egypt. I travel there often and see both sides of the country: its beautiful culture, but sadly also the deep suffering of working horses. Horses that are exhausted, forgotten, and sometimes severely abused. Yet in the midst of these heartbreaking situations, there is a beacon of hope: Mona Lisa Rescues Hurghada.

From a Holiday to a Mission

Twenty-five-year-old Rachell Slump came to Egypt as a tourist, but she couldn’t turn a blind eye to the animal suffering she witnessed. She stayed, and together with her husband Mohammed, her friend, and her friend’s mother, she decided to make a difference. They run a stable where Western standards of care are the norm, but their true life’s work is their rescue: Mona Lisa Rescues Hurghada.

Despite loving care, the best medication, and nights of constant vigilance, sometimes a horse cannot be saved. The suffering has simply gone on for too long. These moments show just how heavy their work is, and how desperately support is needed to save other horses in time.

Unfortunately, love alone is not enough. The costs of medical care and proper nutrition are enormous. In addition, neglected animals often have to be bought free from their owners. Sadly, these owners are often unwilling to give up the animals for free, even when they are in terrible condition. Only when there is truly no other option and the animal can no longer have a humane existence is release the very last resort. The focus is always on hope and recovery. Because I believe so strongly in this mission, I regularly donate myself and bring supplies for the horses whenever I travel to Egypt.
