Marathon Breast Cancer Fundraiser

During the week of Thanksgiving last year, my mom was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer. By the grace of God, the doctors had caught it early, and after months of treatment, she is now cancer free! Nevertheless, this experience greatly impacted her and our entire family.

In February 2022, I completed my first marathon, the Austin Marathon. It was a very painful experience due to an injury I had suffered in the weeks leading up to the race. However, one of the biggest reasons I was able to persevere during that race was the support of my family, especially my Mama. She cared for my injured self throughout the race, applying cooling gel and rolling out my sore muscles when I felt debilitated, all this while still dealing with her cancer (she was only declared cancer-free at the end of March).

I am training for the marathon again, but this time, I am running for a cause that means a lot to my family and me. For my mom's birthday in October, I let her choose the cause I would raise money for. She chose the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, one of the largest charities in the country, focusing specifically on breast cancer. And what better time to kick off this fundraising than during Breast Cancer Awareness month?

Some stats from Breastcancer.org:
  • About 13% (about 1 in 8) of U.S. women are going to develop invasive breast cancer in the course of their life.
  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. In 2022, it’s estimated that about 30% of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers.
  • In 2022, an estimated 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S.
  • About 43,250 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2022 from breast cancer.

I hope you will consider donating to this cause and helping my Mama and me reach our goal to help those who are still fighting and those who will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Thank you and God Bless you!
