Most everyone I know is aware that I had to retire on disability after 28 years of teaching. It was heartbreaking, but I could no longer breathe well enough to teach and am on constant oxygen at home and wear oxygen when I'm out. I've tried every medical procedure offered from here to Mayo Clinic to Tampa Lung Institute to get better and am now to the point of the only way I can stay alive is to have a double lung transplant.
I was placed on the list November 20, 2015, but had a baby stroke on December 9th which took me back off the list. I was reinstated as an active lung receipant on February 2, 2016 and am eagerly awaiting my magic lungs. Doctors say I will have 20 more years of quality life after my recovery. I'm pretty tough and should beat their expectations for sure. Would love to run the Peachtree Road Race, go up in a hot air balloon, and visit places I haven't been yet.
The operation is 8 - 12 hours, then I will be placed in ICU for 3-7 days without being able to talk, stay at Emory Hospital up to 30 plus days until I'm well enough to go into their Emory Rehabilitation Home for up to 30 plus days. The total recovery of this surgery is one year to eighteen months.
Georgia Transplant Foundation says the costs of this operation is astronomical at best, somewhere in the excess of $50,000 for the first year. The prescriptions alone can run $3,000.00 a month along with the cost of staying at the Rehab Center of $1400.00 - $2,400.00 if youre only there 30 days. There's also medical bills not covered under insurance along with everyday expenses of being there.
This is very hard for me as I've always been a giver, not a taker. I would love to be able to raise some of the money now through my family and friends so I can afford the additional cost easier. I can't begin to thank you enough for your donation in advance. Just one more thing that I will put to rest and not worry with.
