Imagine living a life filled with obstacles most of us will never face… and still choosing joy every single day.

That is Mikey.

Mikey is a young man living with Cerebral Palsy and a severe intellectual disability. From the very beginning, his life has been marked by hardship. As a child, he was given up by his birth mother because of his significant disabilities. But Mikey’s story did not end there.

He was later adopted and lovingly raised by one of his teachers — my Grandmother — who saw something extraordinary in him. She devoted her life to caring for Mikey with patience, dignity, and unconditional love until she passed away a few years ago. Her compassion gave Mikey a foundation of hope that still carries him today.

Over the years, Mikey has endured illness, neglect, and abuse while living in group homes. Yet through every setback, one thing has never changed — his radiant smile and his incredible spirit.

You simply cannot be around Mikey without feeling your worries begin to melt away. He brings laughter into heavy rooms. He makes strangers feel like family. His smile is not just an expression — it is his superpower. It is how he connects with the world.

Today, Mikey is finally living in a safe and loving home with his family - two nieces - who cherish and protect him. He has never had much materially, but he gives more joy than most people ever could. He loves music, dancing, puzzles, celebrations, and being surrounded by the people he loves. Mikey truly is the life of the party.

But last month, everything changed.

Mikey suffered a devastating fall that knocked out his front teeth. His dental bridge was broken, and three teeth had to be extracted. For most people, this would be upsetting. For Mikey, it has been heartbreaking. His smile — the very thing that helps him communicate, connect, and feel confident — has been taken from him.

Because of his disabilities, Mikey must be fully sedated for all dental procedures. This makes even routine dental care extremely expensive. Mikey lives on a fixed income and receives Medicaid coverage through his HCS program, which only allows about $2,000 per year for dental services. The sedation required just for basic cleanings already costs around $1,600. Earlier this year, he needed dental treatment due to past neglect, leaving no remaining coverage for this unexpected emergency.

The total cost to restore Mikey’s teeth — and his beloved smile — is estimated to be $14,000.

This is not about vanity. This is about dignity.

This is about confidence.

This is about giving Mikey back the joy and connection that his smile brings to everyone around him. One way he communicates to the world that life is good.
