Save Our Mom

It was a year ago, just before we were leaving for a family fishing trip, that Mom found out she had Breast Cancer. A triple threat they called it. It was in her Breast and lymph nodes, and it wasn’t going to be an easy fight. We all went fishing that weekend, and Mom decided to keep it to herself until she found out more. The twelve months that followed were predictably hard, but Mom being the stoic one she is, soldiered on.

The following past year involved extensive radiation and chemotherapy. Mom lost her hair, but kept her optimism. There was chemo, there was radiation, there was surgery. Once mom was strong enough, she had a mastectomy. This past July, great news; she was in full remission! We collectively sighed in relief, celebrated and prepared for the next phase of cancer life – remission.

We are not strangers to Cancer. My wife and I have been fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society for the past 8 years. We’ve raised over $20k. In the process we’ve made many good friends, and lost a few. We’re not strangers to what remission entails but were taking our win…it was short lived.

A week after being declared free of cancer, mom started taking a turn for the worse. She was getting headaches, having balance issues and not remembering things she normally would – “ I know that I’ve washed my hands, and I know that I need to dry them now, but I don’t know what that looks like.” Back to the hospital we went for more scans and tests.

The results were devastating to hear: Mom’s cancer had metastasized, and moved to her brain…inoperable. A follow up appointment confirmed that she had two tumors in her brain, one in the prefrontal cortex and another in the cerebellum. This would effect short term memory and cognitive function as well as balance and coordinated muscle movement. Physical removal of the tumour was not possible. The only option was to make the remaining days as pleasant and as long as possible. Focused radiation was prescribed, and then it was just wait.

As of today, all invasive medical procedures have been completed to their terminus; we have been told to enjoy our time together.

I know too much to let this be the end of treatment. We are being poisoned by our environments; poisoned to death. There are options out there that focus on building defence more so than destroying the offensive cells. Over 100 years ago Dr. Max Gerson Dr. Max Gerson discovered that diet was in fact the best medicine available to human kind (let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food – Hippocrates). That by eating healthy, and by eliminating the toxins that we are exposed to daily; our bodies will take on the defensive/invasive role of ridding the body of what ails it. There are a couple of clinics around the world that I am aware of that provide this treatment, and we want to give Mom a fighting chance by sending her to one of these clinics for a five week intensive cleanse.

The clinic we have in mind is Dr. Hilu's Naturopathic clinic in Spain. The treatment involves a purely plant based organic diet combined with juicing and a variety of accompanying therapies. Dr. Hilu
This is a five week intensive therapy, and time is of the essence. If we are able to reach this fundraising goal soon, we can stop this aggressive Cancer from propagating before it's too late. Please, if there's anything you can spare, your help is our hope of beating this terrible disease. Any help is appreciated.
