The Artist and the Astronaut

How can one couple’s individual life stories paint a picture of an entire generation? What can we learn from those who were in the trenches of change? What can we learn from living a life in its entirety? Our relevance as humans has everything to do with what has come before us. Our present freedom to explore and express is extraordinary because of the pioneers who risked everything to move us forward. Although different in perspective, early Space Exploration and (unconventional) Art together have weaved a tapestry that today defines both who we are as a nation and who we can become as human beings.

I have begun filming a documentary which connects important historical events of the 60’s and 70’s from the different perspectives of two of the most interesting people I know, Col. Jerry Carr, Apollo astronaut, and his wife, artist/activist Pat Musick.  An Apollo astronaut and Artist seem to be diametrically opposed, until I listened to their stories which are actually intricately intertwined during some of our nation’s most exciting and most trying times.

Col. Jerry Carr and Pat Musick, embody a post WWII generation who fought a war and protested a war; a generation that succeeded in opening our consciousness, and defying the laws of gravity.  The trajectory of their lives brought many ordained occasions and together they are still making a difference.

My sense of urgency comes from the fact that many of the people who experienced these events first hand are getting older. The people who lived through the Cuban missile crisis, the early United States space program, Civil Rights protests, and Vietnam are now in their 80’s and 90’s. These agents of history live across the nation and the world.

The  documentary begins in Manchester, Vermont but will span the globe. From a moonwalker in Houston, to cosmonauts in Russia, this documentary will be like no other.  I have so far secured access to major players in the NASA and space community, the art community, representatives from the Nixon and Carter administrations, musicians, Pat and Jerry and thier friends and family-- these people need to be interviewed now: that is why I have already begun filming and interviewing.

Our goal for The Artist and the Astronaut is to be screened at film festivals globally, have a theatrical release, educate, inspire, and capture the history, love and excitement of this unique American Couple.

The $30,000 that we raise is the first step to help us with, gear, travel, car rental, legal and transcriptions (transcriptions of interviews alone will run upwards to $2,000).  I am not getting paid.  Please help me capture these stories on film.

Whatever you can contribute will help. Please share this with those you think may be interested in supporting the film. Every share matters. Thank you!

You’ve read about these historical events----experience them again for the first time through the eyes of the artist and the astronaut.
